The best single origin espresso subscription—decaf too!

If you have a home espresso setup, chances are you are picky about your coffee. There are tons of phenomenal roasters putting out the meticulously crafted coffees for us to enjoy. Most offer single origin coffee. Many offer espresso options. Few offer single origin espresso. Even less specialize entirely on single origin espresso.

That is where we at Dose Coffee come in—a specialty coffee roaster focused entirely on single origin espresso.

What is Single Origin Coffee?

Single origin coffee is a term used to describe coffee that is sourced from a single geographical location. This can be as specific as a single farm, estate, or cooperative. Unlike blends, which combine beans from multiple regions to create a particular flavor profile, single origin coffee showcases the unique characteristics and nuances of beans from one specific area. This distinction allows coffee enthusiasts to experience the inherent flavors and qualities that are influenced by the region's soil, climate, and cultivation practices.

Single origin coffee vastly expands the aroma and flavor possibilities beyond what you find in a red or blue can.

Popular Single Origin Coffee Varieties

Among the many single origin coffee varieties available, some have gained particular popularity due to their exceptional flavor profiles and unique characteristics. One such variety is the Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, renowned for its bright acidity and floral, tea-like notes. This coffee often features hints of jasmine, bergamot, and citrus, making it a favorite among coffee enthusiasts who appreciate delicate and complex flavors. The high-altitude growing conditions and traditional wet processing methods used in Yirgacheffe contribute to its distinctive taste.

Another highly regarded single origin variety is the Guatemalan Antigua. Grown in the Antigua Valley, this coffee is known for its full body, rich flavor, and bright acidity. The volcanic soil and unique microclimate of the region impart distinct chocolatey and nutty notes, often accompanied by hints of spice and fruit. Guatemalan Antigua coffee is celebrated for its balance and complexity, making it a popular choice for those who enjoy a well-rounded and flavorful cup.

You will definitely see offerings from Ethiopia and Guatemala in our rotation (a natural Ethiopian is our collective favorite). We're all about the variety and finding something new, so look out for coffees from Costa Rica, El Salvador, Peru, Rwanda, Yemen, Papua New Guinea and Vietnam, among others.

What makes it Single Origin Espresso?

Espresso is not a type of coffee, rather a method of preparation. Any coffee made with an espresso machine is espresso. Take any single origin coffee and pull a shot, and there you have it–single origin espresso.

When picking our next offering, we hone in on a few simple characteristics to set the base for a great espresso: big body, bold flavor and mindful acidity. From there, it’s all about variety. It’s not just about chocolate and citrus. We are no holds barred on flavor, aroma and complexity, seeking a new experience each morning.

Once we’ve found the right bean, we roast to bring out the best balance with espresso in mind. Roasts are kept on the light to medium side to highlight the true character of the single origin coffee.

Is single origin decaf espresso a thing?

You bet your sweet bippy, it is! We’ll let you in on a little secret–we’re predominately decaf drinkers. It allows us to consume more coffee without disturbing sleep. Decaf espresso makes the best afternoon lattes and even better evening martinis.

Decaf coffee tends to be an afterthought, but not at Dose. Selfishly, we put extra care into find the best decaffeinated beans to create our single origin decaf espresso. We’re excited to see the market (slowly) growing and what new selections we’ll be able to share each month.

What about my pourover? My mokapot? My French Press?

Espresso is a method of preparation, not a type of coffee. If you pull a shot of espresso with single origin coffee, you’ve made single origin espresso.

So keep on pouring, potting and pressing! While we select and roast coffee beans with espresso in mind, it’s still just coffee at the end of the day. You can expect a rounded, smoother profile, no matter how you brew it.
